Step One: Muscular Categorization This is the first, and possibly the most important, of the four steps. Learning the muscles of the body is imperative as you must understand what you'll be training in the first place. Knowledge of the human muscular system is essential in allowing you to properly channel your weight training energies. You won't be required to recite quotes from Grays Anatomy, but proper anatomical knowledge will enable you to enhance the communication between your mind and body. Knowing what muscles you're training is the first step to mastering how your body develops. Basic anatomy, often called gross anatomy, is sufficient knowledge that will enable you to mold your body into a work of art. However, the more you delve into this science the better you can train yourself and others. Start by learning more about yourself. Know your body, and it will soon start to look like it's being trained by a physiology expert. To begin, locate an anatomy chart - any one will do. If you don't have one, I suggest you invest in one and insert it into your training log book. While studying the chart, locate the basic muscle groups and learn their names and functions.

Once you have an anatomical chart, categorize the muscles of the body like I've done in Chart A below. In Step Two, I'll explain how to select the exercises which target each of your muscles so you can achieve a balanced approach to training leaving no stone unturned. Chart A The muscular system of the body can be divided into ten categories. (Larger muscles listed)
  1. Shoulders: Deltoids
  2. Arms: Biceps, Triceps, muscles of the Forearm
  3. Chest: Pectorals
  4. Back (upper): Latissimus Dorsi, Trapezius
  5. Back (lower): Lumbar (spinal) Erectors
  6. Legs (upper): Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Adductors, Hip Flexors
  7. Legs (lower): Calves
  8. Buttocks: Gluteus
  9. Midsection: Abdominals, Obliques
  10. Neck: Sterno-Mastoid, Trapezius
